minutes of march meeting

Heartworks

Minutes of March 26, 2008
Present: Julie Crosier, Carmel Furtado, Stacy Gates, Lisa Kelly, Blake Moran, Irene Nadler, Victoria Silsby, Margo Smithwick, Dagny St. John, Gail Suitor.
Old Business
Lisa began the meeting by talking about the two care packages that were put together and mailed for Paul and Brian. Although we received many items for the packages, it seems to be more effective when we collect items directly at our meetings. Lisa passed along via email the letter from Brian thanking everyone for their support. Brian will be at Mount Sinai for an extended period receiving a full bone marrow treatment. The baby package for Cooper is being delivered by Maralise and to date Missy has enough food from friends and family.
Lisa met with her friends and counterparts to Heartworks in New Jersey this past weekend and they discussed the importance of getting permission from an individual before bringing it for consideration to our group. Confidentiality is of the utmost importance.
New Business
• Dagny began a discussion on bereavement since a daughter (26 years old), of a friend of hers had passed away this week. Gail shared that when her Mother died she was given two plants, one delicate to symbolize how fragile life is and a hardy plant that keeps on living to remind us of the person who passed away. We decided this would be an excellent Heartwork’s bereavement gift. Stacy volunteered her studio at 93 Hard Farm Rd. Manchester, on April 6th from 2-5pm as Craft and Supply Day. Blake suggested we also make napkins as something to include in our baskets. Stacy has most supplies, but we should bring the following: potting soil, small pots and plant cuttings.
• We also discussed the making of cards and a T shirt with a Heartworks logo created by kids. This could help to create a name for ourselves if we had a stand at the local Farmers Market.
• Victoria mentioned having an auction at our meetings, where we would bring a small item for an auction.
• It was decided that at our next meeting, everyone should donate $ 5.00 to offset some of our expenses. But, “if you can’t swing it, don’t bring it.”
• Victoria shared that Scotty needs further chemo treatments and would be traveling to the hospital. He is barely eating and relies on Ensure. We decided to provide gas cards and Ensure. Anyone interested in helping, please refer to action item below for further information.
• Julie volunteered her “farm” as a fund raiser in May. She has many animals and a beautiful setting in Arlington. We would need to help with the activities etc. further discussion next month. Margo will do a flier for the event.
